Does Being Wrong have Its Benefits?

By Coach Cj Swaby

I was speeding through the aisles at my local Asda Supermarket. Having devoured my book, I was searching for a magazine that would satisfy my intellect and enertain me at the same time on my journey home.

I struggled to find a Fitness magazine that filled the criteria. After powering through the store like Lewis Hamilton in 2nd place my eyes came to rest on a typical "meat head" magazine.

You know the type, half naked musclemen adorning the pages," 21 gun salute" bicep workouts, adverts for 99 different whey protein supplements - each claiming to be better than the rest.

One magazine in particular caught my attention. I had once read it 15 years ago in my late teenage years. I thought, " If anything, at least I'll have a good laugh reading it." This magazine was Muscle and Fitness.

Boy did I get it wrong. Curious I read on. Captivating articles on the importance of gut function for health and packing on muscle, how a raw food diet can increase your vitality and prolong your life, what types of fat are essential and where to get them from and more.

Yes there was your typical "18 day split wonder workouts" but as  I flicked through the pages I stumbled across familiar experts in the Industry such as Matt Lovell, Martin Rooney and it soon became apparent I was in good company.

They say you can't judge a book by its cover. It appears that things can and do change despite what you think.

If you are willing to widen your point of view you can see far more benefits to you, I guess being wrong is not so bad afterall.

When Weight Loss Fails

By Coach Cj Swaby

I was reading an article yesterday and was surprised to discover that new NHS figures put cases of obesity in the UK at over 4.7 million and that according to the World Health Organisation Obesity is the 5th leading cause of death globally.

We all know someone who could drop a few pounds, and what the article repeatedly focused on to lose weight you must eat less calories. I mean, this seems so obvious that no one questions it.

And thats what surprised me. I'm sure you know someone that went on a new fantastic diet recommended in all the latest magazines by all the Stars, backed by the latest research, lose the weight but only to put it back on again. Does that sound familiar?

Yo - Yo dieting I call it and here's whats wrong with it. When Usain Bolt crosses the finish line what does he do? He slows down, celebrates with joy. Then Stops. He may run a victory lap in excitement, but will he run an extra lap or two at top speed? I doubt it.

You know why? because he's achieved his goal. He worked towards it and now he has hit the target. But remember he will now have to do it again at some point.

So if you focus on losing weight guess what? thats exactly what you will do but you can only lose so much and will put it back on again, your weight will bounce up and down. But this only happens if weight loss is your focus.

However, shift your focus to ACHIEVING a target weight and KEEPING at that weight. Now when you focus your mind on achieving a target weight and staying there you will develop strategies to succeed at being a healthy weight.

Not only that soon you will realise that eating the right kinds of healthy food for you and optimising your hormones play an important part. This will happen naturally as you begin to develop practical nutrition strategies and behaviours (Discovering your Metabolic Type can help).

The key here is to shift your focus and take action. That way you can unlock the door to better health and vitality now.

What Else Do You Do?

By Coach Cj Swaby

Invariably I get asked this question every time I step into the Gym "What else do you do? I mean apart from Kettlebell training...do you lift weights?"

This never fails to get me curious. The little voice in my head begins to pipe up , " I wonder what they would have to believe to ask me that question?"

It soon becomes  clear that there is a lot of misinformation clogging up their brains. As if Kettlebell training isn't weight training?

Usually what they mean is, do I weight train - four day split routines using barbells and dumbells. You know, that sort of thing.

The answer to that is no. Don't get me wrong, Barbells feature heavilly in my training but you won't find me spending hours on end in the gym working isolated muscle groups with split routines and the like. Not happening.

It doesn't fit with my training goals or work with my lifestyle.  Contrary to popular fitness magazines, this type of training isn't a perfect match for everyone.

I keep my training simple, and my lifts compound. I don't try to make the workout more sexy than it needs to be. I just stick to the basics. Do what works until it stops working, then I switch it up a little.

Want to know how I mix it up with Kettlebell Training and Barbell Training? Here's what my typical week looks like,

Monday & Friday:  Barbells

The focus is on strength and explosive strength. Power cleans, Bench, Squats, Bent over Row,  Deadlifts and a few others- these form the backbone of the sessions.

Tuesday / Wednesday (Depends on recovery) & Saturday: Kettlebell Training

I keep it short and intense. Power endurance is my focus. Density training or timed sets work well for me. Exercise wise?  pull, push, squat, lunge and rotational movements dominate the workout.

While I am active everyday, I only have 4 dedicated training sessions per week. Its all I need,  and it suits me just fine.

Will this type of training get you freakishly strong and pack on muscle? You bet. Do I have the time or patience to train like a body builder? Sure don't.

It Takes Patience

By Coach Cj Swaby

Its easy to fall for it. The before and after pictures show the transformation, listening to the glowing testimonials makes for a pretty convincing argument.

They're  probably tired of their situation and focused on making a change. I mean who wouldn't want the body of their dreams?

 I certainly would.

However there is difference between having a transformation and then making it stick. Plus a subtle distinction between looking good and being healthy.

The thing is they are not always the same thing. The devil is in the details. I know which one I would chose.

Just a thought.

It's Broken

By Coach Cj Swaby

This post has been a long time coming. The Fitness Industry is broken. Why? because I say it is. The key thing is I think it's broken : therefore it is (stay with me  now).

You may be thinking how did you arrive at this conclusion Coach? Let me break it down to you simple and plain (hold on to your seats).  The Health & Fitness Industry has turned into somewhat of a farce, an absurdity with broadly stylised performances. Case in point.....

EXHIBIT A : Baby Yoga

Now, I consider myself to be a reasonably open minded individual, however I don't care what scientific study you've got to back this methodology up, or how many Gin and Tonics you have in your system to make this seem a plausible (let alone a good) idea, this is just plain wrong.

Risk V Benefit? I don't have to explain to you the risk or the inherent dangers involved in this, if I do, maybe you should reconsider your role as a parent (if you are one), and if you are not, you may want to consider contraception.

Self proclaimed Guru's are rife in this industry spewing out misinformation, and endangering the public, plus bringing the industry into disrepute.

From Baby Yoga Guru's to over weight, fat loss Kettlebell experts (yes, they do exist) and Shaman Personal Training Healers with obscure powers, this does not sit well with me. But these are not the only things (yes there is more)

EXHIBIT B

Now I'm not disputing any claims "backed by science" that the shake weight has, as quite frankly I do not wish to be sued.  But I am using it as an example of the quick fix quick solutions and unfulfilled promises that the fitness industry makes.

It has the opportunity to make a real impact on peoples lives and well being. Instead the public are bombarded with seemingly  "too good to be true" miracle cure to that unwanted body fat, poor self esteem, dangerous health issues and the like. In my opinion the public is often short changed, with their wallets the firm target. Long term benefits exchanged for short term gain.

Do you really think all the models in the shake weight ads used the shake weight exclusively to get their physiques? My suggestion is take two groups, both overweight by at least two stone (with 30% body fat). Put them on similar nutrition plans then stick one group on a periodised weight training program and the other group on shake weight only program and lets see what each group looks like in  3 - 4  months. Now if you ask me,  that would be more telling (just saying).

There are numerous  bits of equipment that are little more that fitness gimmicks. These litter the floor of exploitation. The thing is, you'll not only see them on infommercials, but firmly entrenched in your local gym or health club too.

EXHIBIT C

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2008 the fifth leading risk for cause of death globally is being overweight and obesity. Here are some interesting direct quotes from the WHO website.

"In addition, 44% of the diabetes burden, 23% of the ischaemic heart disease burden and between 7% and 41% of certain cancer burdens are attributable to overweight and obesity.

Some WHO global estimates from 2008 follow.

  • 1.5 billion adults, 20 and older, were overweight.
  • Of these 1.5 billion overweight adults, over 200 million men and nearly 300 million women were obese.
  • Overall, more than one in ten of the world’s adult population was obese."

Also did you know that "overweight and obesity are linked to more deaths worldwide than underweight. For example, 65% of the worlds population live in countries where overweight and obesity kill more  people than underweight (this includes all high- income and middle income- countries)."  [http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs311/en/index.html].

Stop for a moment. Re- read the last bit, that is highlighted in bold. That's right, these are countries with developed health care systems, with food authorities and the like.  In the UK we have the Department of Health, which heralds such innovative strategies such as weight management services for children and young people. A noble gesture to reverse the forth coming apocalypse.

What causes obesity and overweight?  According to the WHO

"The fundamental cause of obesity and overweight is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. Globally, there has been:

  • an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat, salt and sugars but low in vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients; and
  • a decrease in physical activity due to the increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation, and increasing urbanization."

Just so I'm clear, being overweight and obese has nothing  to do with the fact that the food is nutrient deficient because of farming practices and policies, or "Frankenstein Foods"? Nothing to do with hormone imbalances due to nutrient deficient foods.

Nothing to do with the fact that foods  such as whole grains can damage you, and can ruin your digestive equipment (stomach, intestines etc) so that you some will become ill with diseases such as IBS, Celeaics disease, Chron's, Diabetes, Obesity,  Heart Disease or even  linked to some cancers? That's right. Nothing.  The conspiracy theorists amongst you might want to click this link and read  HERE.    Then come back and read this article HERE.  (But remember to pop back to this blog!)

You done? Cool, welcome back.  The cynic in me would say that the Health & Fitness Industry is Broken on purpose.  A lot of people make money that way. However another part of me would like believe there are those in the industry that  came to make a positive difference, act with integrity and give more then they take. These are your Bruce Wayne's of the Health & Fitness Industry. These people,  I salute you.

So tell me, honestly, what do you think is broken in the Fitness Industry?

Yours in strength

Gluten-free is hot these days. There are books and websites, restaurants with gluten free menus, and grocery stores with hundreds of new gluten-free food products on the shelf. Is this a fad, or a reflection of response to a real problem?

Yes, gluten is a real problem. But the problem is not just gluten. In fact, there are three major hidden reasons that wheat products, not just gluten (along with sugar in all its forms) is a major contributor to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dementia, depression and so many other modern ills.

This is why there are now 30 percent more obese than undernourished in the world, and why chronic lifestyle and dietary driven disease kills more than twice as many people as infectious disease globally. These non-communicable, chronic diseases will cost our global economy $47 trillion over the next 20 years.

Sadly, this tsunami of chronic illness is increasingly caused by eating our beloved diet staple, bread, the staff of life, and all the wheat products hidden in everything from soups to vodka to lipstick to envelope adhesive.

The biggest problem is wheat, the major source of gluten in our diet. But wheat weaves its misery through many mechanisms, not just the gluten! The history of wheat parallels the history of chronic disease and obesity across the world. Supermarkets today contain walls of wheat and corn disguised in literally hundreds of thousands of different food-like products, or FrankenFoods. Each American now consumes about 55 pounds of wheat flour every year.

It is not just the amount but also the hidden components of wheat that drive weight gain and disease. This is not the wheat your great-grandmother used to bake her bread. It is FrankenWheat -- a scientifically engineered food product developed in the last 50 years.

How Wheat -- and Gluten -- Trigger Weight Gain, Prediabetes, Diabetes and More

This new modern wheat may look like wheat, but it is different in three important ways that all drive obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, dementia and more.

  1. It contains a Super Starch -- amylopectin A that is super fattening.
  2. It contains a form of Super Gluten that is super-inflammatory.
  3. It contains forms of a Super Drug that is super-addictive and makes you crave and eat more.

The Super Starch

The Bible says, "Give us this day our daily bread." Eating bread is nearly a religious commandment. But the Einkorn, heirloom, Biblical wheat of our ancestors is something modern humans never eat.

Instead, we eat dwarf wheat, the product of genetic manipulation and hybridization that created short, stubby, hardy, high-yielding wheat plants with much higher amounts of starch and gluten and many more chromosomes coding for all sorts of new odd proteins. The man who engineered this modern wheat won the Nobel Prize -- it promised to feed millions of starving around the world. Well, it has, and it has made them fat and sick.

The first major difference of this dwarf wheat is that it contains very high levels of a super starch called amylopectin A. This is how we get big fluffy Wonder Bread and Cinnabons.

Here's the downside. Two slices of whole wheat bread now raise your blood sugar more than two tablespoons of table sugar.

There is no difference between whole wheat and white flour here. The biggest scam perpetrated on the unsuspecting public is the inclusion of "whole grains" in many processed foods full of sugar and wheat, giving the food a virtuous glow. The best way to avoid foods that are bad for you is to stay away from foods with health claims on the labels. They are usually hiding something bad.

In people with diabetes, both white and whole grain bread raises blood sugar levels 70 to 120 mg/dl over starting levels. We know that foods with a high glycemic index make people store belly fat, trigger hidden fires of inflammation in the body and give you a fatty liver, leading the whole cascade of obesity, pre-diabetes and diabetes. This problem now affects every other American and is the major driver of nearly all chronic disease and most our health care costs. Diabetes now sucks up one in three Medicare dollars.

The Super Gluten

Not only does this dwarf, FrankenWheat, contain the super starch, but it also contains super gluten which is much more likely to create inflammation in the body. And in addition to a host of inflammatory and chronic diseases caused by gluten, it causes obesity and diabetes.

Gluten is that sticky protein in wheat that holds bread together and makes it rise. The old fourteen-chromosome-containing Einkorn wheat codes for the small number of gluten proteins, and those that it does produce are the least likely to trigger celiac disease and inflammation. The new dwarf wheat contains twenty-eight or twice as many chromosomes and produces a large variety of gluten proteins, including the ones most likely to cause celiac disease.

Five Ways Gluten Makes You Sick and Fat

Gluten can trigger inflammation, obesity and chronic disease in five major ways.

  1. Full-blown celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that triggers body-wide inflammation triggering insulin resistance, which causes weight gain and diabetes, as well as over 55 conditions including autoimmune diseases, irritable bowel, reflux, cancer, depression, osteoporosis and more.
  2. Low-level inflammation reactions to gluten trigger the same problems even if you don't have full-blown celiac disease but just have elevated antibodies (7 percent of the population, or 21 million Americans).
  3. There is also striking new research showing that adverse immune reactions to gluten may result from problems in very different parts of the immune system than those implicated in celiac disease. Most doctors dismiss gluten sensitivity if you don't have a diagnosis of celiac disease, but this new research proves them wrong. Celiac disease results when the body creates antibodies against the wheat (adaptive immunity), but another kind of gluten sensitivity results from a generalized activated immune system (innate immunity). This means that people can be gluten-sensitive without having celiac disease or gluten antibodies and still have inflammation and many other symptoms.
  4. A NON-gluten glycoprotein or lectin (combination of sugar and protein) in wheat called wheat germ agglutinin (WGA)[1] found in highest concentrations in whole wheat increases whole body inflammation as well. This is not an autoimmune reaction, but can be just as dangerous and cause heart attacks.[2]
  5. Eating too much gluten-free food (what I call gluten-free junk food) like gluten-free cookies, cakes and processed food. Processed food has a high glycemic load. Just because it is gluten-free, doesn't mean it is healthy. Gluten-free cakes and cookies are still cakes and cookies! Vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and seeds and lean animal protein are all gluten free -- stick with those.

Let's look at this a little more closely. Gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, spelt and oats, can cause celiac disease, which triggers severe inflammation throughout the body and has been linked to autoimmune diseases, mood disorders, autism, schizophrenia, dementia, digestive disorders, nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, cancer and more.

Celiac Disease: The First Problem

Celiac disease and gluten-related problems have been increasing, and now affect at least 21 million Americans and perhaps many millions more. And 99 percent of people who have problems with gluten or wheat are NOT currently diagnosed.

Ninety-eight percent of people with celiac have a genetic predisposition known as HLA DQ2 or DQ8, which occurs in 30 percent of the population. But even though our genes haven't changed, we have seen a dramatic increase in celiac disease in the last 50 years because of some environmental trigger.

In a recent study that compared blood samples taken 50 years ago from 10,000 young Air Force recruits to samples taken recently from 10,000 people, researchers found something quite remarkable. There has been a real 400 percent increase in celiac disease over the last 50 years.[3] And that's just the full-blown disease affecting about one in 100 people, or about three million Americans. We used to think that this only was diagnosed in children with bloated bellies, weight loss and nutritional deficiencies. But now we know it can be triggered (based on a genetic susceptibility) at any age and without ANY digestive symptoms. The inflammation triggered by celiac disease can drive insulin resistance, weight gain and diabetes, just like any inflammatory trigger -- and I have seen this over and over in my patients.

Gluten and Gut Inflammation: The Second Problem

But there are two ways other than celiac disease in which wheat appears to be a problem.

The second way that gluten causes inflammation is through a low-grade autoimmune reaction to gluten. Your immune system creates low-level antibodies to gluten, but doesn't create full-blown celiac disease. In fact, 7 percent of the population, 21 million, have these anti-gliadin antibodies. These antibodies were also found in 18 percent of people with autism and 20 percent of those with schizophrenia.

A major study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that hidden gluten sensitivity (elevated antibodies without full-blown celiac disease) was shown to increase risk of death by 35 to 75 percent, mostly by causing heart disease and cancer.[4] Just by this mechanism alone, over 20 million Americans are at risk for heart attack, obesity, cancer and death.

How does eating gluten cause inflammation, heart disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer?

Most of the increased risk occurs when gluten triggers inflammation that spreads like a fire throughout your whole body. It damages the gut lining. Then all the bugs and partially-digested food particles inside your intestine get across the gut barrier and are exposed your immune system, 60 percent of which lies right under the surface of the one cell thick layer of cells lining your gut or small intestine. If you spread out the lining of your gut, it would equal the surface area of a tennis court. Your immune system starts attacking these foreign proteins, leading to systemic inflammation that then causes heart disease, dementia, cancer, diabetes and more.

Dr. Alessio Fasano, a celiac expert from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, discovered a protein made in the intestine called "zonulin" that is increased by exposure to gluten.[5] Zonulin breaks up the tight junctions or cement between the intestinal cells that normally protect your immune system from bugs and foreign proteins in food leaking across the intestinal barrier. If you have a "leaky gut," you will get inflammation throughout your whole body and a whole list of symptoms and diseases.

Why is there an increase in disease from gluten in the last 50 years?

It is because, as I described earlier, the dwarf wheat grown in this country has changed the quality and type of gluten proteins in wheat, creating much higher gluten content and many more of the gluten proteins that cause celiac disease and autoimmune antibodies.

Combine that with the damage our guts have suffered from our diet, environment, lifestyle and medication use, and you have the perfect storm for gluten intolerance. This super gluten crosses our leaky guts and gets exposed to our immune system. Our immune system reacts as if gluten was something foreign, and sets off the fires of inflammation in an attempt to eliminate it. However, this inflammation is not selective, so it begins to attack our cells -- leading to diabesity and other inflammatory diseases.

Damage to the gastrointestinal tract from overuse of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil or Aleve and acid-blocking drugs like Prilosec or Nexium, combined with our low-fiber, high-sugar diet, leads to the development of celiac disease and gluten intolerance or sensitivity and the resultant inflammation. That is why elimination of gluten and food allergens or sensitivities can be a powerful way to prevent and reverse diabesity and many other chronic diseases.

The Super Drug

Not only does wheat contain super starch and super gluten -- making it super fattening and super inflammatory -- but it also contains a super drug that makes you crazy, hungry and addicted.

When processed by your digestion, the proteins in wheat are converted into shorter proteins, "polypeptides," called "exorphins." They are like the endorphins you get from a runner's high and bind to the opioid receptors in the brain, making you high, and addicted just like a heroin addict. These wheat polypeptides are absorbed into the bloodstream and get right across the blood brain barrier. They are called "gluteomorphins," after "gluten" and "morphine."

These super drugs can cause multiple problems, including schizophrenia and autism. But they also cause addictive eating behavior, including cravings and bingeing. No one binges on broccoli, but they binge on cookies or cake. Even more alarming is the fact that you can block these food cravings and addictive eating behaviors and reduce calorie intake by giving the same drug we use in the emergency room to block heroin or morphine in an overdose, called naloxone. Binge eaters ate nearly 30 percent less food when given this drug.

Bottom line: wheat is an addictive appetite stimulant.

How to Beat the Wheat, and Lose the Weight

First, you should get tested to see if you have a more serious wheat or gluten problem.

If you meet any of these criteria, then you should do a six-week 100 percent gluten-free diet trial to see how you feel. If you have three out of five criteria, you should be gluten-free for life.

  1. You have symptoms of celiac (any digestive, allergic, autoimmune or inflammatory disease, including diabesity).
  2. You get better on a gluten-free diet.
  3. You have elevated antibodies to gluten (anti-gliadin, AGA, or tissue transglutaminase antibodies, TTG).
  4. You have a positive small intestinal biopsy.
  5. You have the genes that predispose you to gluten (HLA DQ2/8).

Second, for the rest of you who don't have gluten antibodies or some variety of celiac -- the super starch and the super drug, both of which make you fat and sick, can still affect you. So go cold turkey for six weeks. And keep a journal of how you feel.

The problems with wheat are real, scientifically validated and ever-present. Getting off wheat may not only make you feel better and lose weight, it could save your life.

My personal hope is that together we can create a national conversation about a real, practical solution for the prevention, treatment, and reversal of our obesity, diabetes and chronic disease epidemic. Getting off wheat may just be an important step.

Feeling The Difference.....Pt 1

Around two years ago I found out about the wonderful world of kettlebells from my good friend and strengh and conditioning coach Cj Swaby, never then did I understand the journey I was then about to undertake.

I have studied martial arts for over 17 years, everything from boxing, kickboxing and thai boxing, for the last 12 years I have studied a form of Kung Fu called Wing Chun.

About a year ago I started to feel different within my martial training I already had a good understanding of how the human body works but yet I still felt different, more explosive, more together....
I decided to look into this further and have started to establish a link within my own training between some of the movement patterns in Kettlebell lifts (power generation) and Kung Fu.

So let me go into this a bit further so that you guys can understand where im coming from.

1: The Wing Chun Punch

The Wing Chun punch has a "ball on the end of a chain" feeling, relaxed and heavy. The punch is driven from your lats and your deltoid and travels in a straight line (shortest distance) outwards from the center of your chest, now if you flip that movement patteren upright it is exactly the same as the Kettlebell overhead press!! all joints stacked.
A way to recruit more power for the punch comes from another Kettlebell lift...The Jerk, using the bump part from the lift which helps generate the power to get the Kettlebell above your head.
Looking at this now from a Wing Chun perspective....
In Wing Chun we have a containable chest (rounded slightly) this enables us to be torqued from the spine, this is where the first part of the punch comes from, popping from the spine adding your lats then deltoid, finally hearing the "whip" of the relaxed fist, this is a way of joint stacking in motion, add to this your body weight and movement towards your opponent will only result in one way......

Training with Kettllebells has given me new angles for my muscle memory increasing my conditioning like you could not believe. I have found that it has helped me be able to move freely within Kung Fu especially when under load (sparring/free fighting) using technical ability from my martial training and conditioning from Kettllebells.
Training with Kettllebells the body is always in motion every point of the lift is critical, having to use your stabiliser muscles more often, this in turn is making it easier for me to switch muscle groups, only recruiting whats necessary making my kicks/ punches faster..

Being tense whilst trying to strike to me is like driving with the handbrake on!!

More findings to follow.....

CJS Kettlebells Presents Dinosaur Training UK Workshop

CJS Kettlebells,  the highly established British Kettlebell training provider, has teamed up with top U.S  strength coaches, Brook Kubiks of Dinosaur Training, and Mike Mahler of Aggressive Strength, to deliver the two day ground breaking Dinosaur Training and Beyond workshop in London. This is the first time ever in the UK.

The fitness industry has recently seen a renaissance in strength training for men and women, breaking away from mainstream body building to embrace functional strength and athletic development. Discovering the benefits of  hormone optimisation has been critical to this movement, with strength Coach Mike Mahler standing prominently at the head of the field in the U.S. Tom Wyskida who tackled hormone optimisation with Mike explains.

"When I started with  six months ago, I could just barely squeak out 3 good pull ups.  This morning I did 12.  Six months ago, my waistline measured 37 inches.  This morning it is 30 inches.  I can no longer wear any of the clothes that I did six months ago.  I am also able to deadlift 300lbs for 3 reps. When I started, my total Testosterone was 192 and free was 40.7.  In July, total was 481 and free was 78.9." —Tom Wyskida

Barbells, Dumbells and Kettlebells are the tools of choice for this emerging collective.  Brook Kubiks definitive book, Dinosaur Training, radically shaped the future of strength training globally for close to a decade. Simplistic and effective, it served as a wake up call to many who had become disillusioned and had realised routines in fitness magazines didn't work, and their local gym was more interested in  taking their money, rather than their success.

CJS Kettlebells Makes Double Gold For Oylmpian

Coach Cj Swaby

So you are probably wandering what on earth Kelly Holmes has to do with Kettlebells? Well I got a phone call from her training and education team at Double Gold. They had heard of CJS Kettlebells and the work we do throughout the UK (and checked us out on youtube). They asked if I was available for a meeting.

So I am at their London office. The situation? Well, they were planning on running a workshop in Tondbridge Wells. A introduction to Kettlebell training, with people ranging from 16 year old county level athletes, all the way up to memebers of the general public around 68 years of age.

They wanted quality tuition, and the participants to walk away with key skills, so that they could continue Kettlebell Training in their own time if they wished. It had to be informative, and fun.

Sifu Russell Benham, of Kungfu Kettlebells was down to assist me on the Kettlebell Workshop, and needless to say we had great fun. But the question was, did we crack under the pressure of a Double Gold Champion? or did we deliver?  Writer and Astronomer, Emily Baldwin was in attendance and scrutinised all we did, you can see here account of the day HERE. A big thank you to Sifu Russell Benham who provided an outstanding level of coaching.

If you haven't used kettlebells or are new to kettlebells and want a solid grounding in technique then KB Level 1 is a good place to start.

If you have some experience and want to master double kettlebell exercises for maximum impact and results in your training then shoot for KB Level 2 Workshop.

If you want to add a radically different dynamic to your training, learn to  challenge your body in new and  creative ways like the strongmen and women of old with the KB Level 3. This is our odd lifts Kettlebell workshop.
